A lively meeting

Greenspeak was created by Brighton & Hove Green Party and Anthea Ballam in 2004. It aimed to provide a sociable space for people to discuss topics of popular concern, away from more overtly political meetings, welcoming to all no matter what background or associations.

Greenspeak’s second incarnation was born at the start of 2006, organised by Kat Neeser and Martin Grimshaw, with a flow of many volunteers and supporters since, and is now organised by Martin, Ian Lawton and Alison Plaumer. The popular series has a reputation for quality debate with a high calibre of speakers; it explores the space between enquiry, desire for change, science and the concerns of Josephine Bloggs.

Greenspeak likes to put the spotlight on those issues, organisations and people that others don’t, in a forum whose broad appeal and participants are of a rare quality.

The events are created from a budget of £zero and driven by the enthusiasm and goodwill of its supporters. Volunteers donate considerable effort to make Greenspeak happen. All costs and expenses are met by donations collected on the night and there is no entrance fee.

Greenspeak’s interpretation of green is broad enough to include poverty, the cost of living, equality, human rights, happiness, participatory democracy, suffering in all forms and community. Sometimes the evenings have a ‘debate’ format with opposing views, sometimes various approaches around a particular theme.

We always aspire to be better and reach out to more people, but nothing ever happens by itself. If you fancy helping on any level, even on just an ad-hoc / opt in basis, or are concerned that all your ill-gotten bounty is weighing down your karma….then we are always grateful for donations of time, services and cash. In return we promise to spend it for the greater good and make you feel nice about yourself.

Or perhaps just put up a poster and spread the word.

Feedback or suggestions welcome.
